Conveyor Belt Arrestor

The following maintenance schedule should be adhered to, to ensure the safe and effective operation of the CONVEYOR BELT ARRESTOR.

Daily Examination:

Check the operation of the CONVEYOR BELT ARRESTOR by doing the following:

  1. Stop Conveyor Belt. MAKE SURE THAT NO PERSON IS STANDING IN THE VICINITY OF THE ARRESTING ARM.

  2. Check couplings between roller, gearbox and friction switch.

  3. Turn roller in the run-back direction while counting the number of turns. After about 5 turns the Arrestor Arm should activate and lower onto the belt.

  4. Make sure the ARRESTING ARM is clear of any tools and persons. Open the DIRECTIONAL SWITCH assembly. Manually move the DIRECTIONAL SWITCH to other side. This will cause the ARRESTING ARM to lift. Close the DIRECTIONAL SWITCH. Beware of electrical shock.

  5. Check for spillage on arresting beam and clean if necessary.

  6. If the Arrestor Arm does not move down to arrest the Belt as described in 3 above, check the following:

    6.1 Power supply

    6.2 Air pressure

    6.3 Solenoid operated air valve

6.4 Is friction switch mounted level?

6.5 Air leaks or air cylinder seals.

6.6 Sprag clutch between gearbox and friction switch.

Weekly Examination:

  1. Check the operation of the CONVEYOR BELT ARRESTOR as per daily examination.

  2. Grease bearings of roller as well as bushes of Arresting Arm.

  3. check for excessive wear of leather belt on friction switch.

Monthly Examination:

  1. Do examinations as per weekly examinations.

  2. Check all bolts on frame as well as all holding down bolts and tighten if required.

  3. Check entire structure for defects (i.e. any cracks of welding or bending of beams).

  4. Check lubricant of gearbox (when applicable).

Every 6 Months:

  1. Replace Pin Disk Coupling.

  2. Replace leather Belt on Friction Switch.

  3. Replace 2 x 3Omm Pillow Blocks.

Every 12 Months:

  1. Replace seal kit on air cylinder.

  2. Replace sprag clutch between gearbox and friction switch.

Optional:

If required, a limit switch may be installed in the vicinity of the Arresting Arm which will trip the Conveyor Belt drive in the event of the Arresting Arm moving downwards towards the Belt for any reason. A siren or flashing light may also be installed.

Important General Note:

Only the above modification or a modification that will strengthen the structure may be allowed with written permission from Gruisfontein Engineering. Gruisfontein Egineering will take no responsibility for any other modification to the system and it will be at the sole discretion of GRUISFONTEIN ENGINEERING if any modification does in fact strengthen the structure or not, or if such a modification affects the operation of the CONVEYOR BELT ARRESTOR negatively. Proper record must be kept of all inspections. The use of pirate parts or parts not supplied by Gruisfontein Engineering or approved agent can have serious effects with possible loss of lives and damage to equipment. This as well as unauthorised adjusments to settings will invalidate your guarantee and can cause the arrestor not to operate in event of belt breakage.

Final Safety Tip:

Whether the Arresting Arm is activated manually or not, make sure that all persons are clear of the Arresting Arm before it is set in motion.
