Introduction to Belt Cleaning

Welcome to the topic of conveyor belt cleaning !

As the range of materials which are conveyed on belt conveyors has grown and the applications for conveyors continues to expand, so too has the necessity for effective belt cleaning.

Assuming that a conservative 0.1 percent of the load transported on a conveyor is consistently carried over and deposited along the return strand, then this 'spillage' would equate to approximately 9 000 tons of carryover per year on a conveyor rated for 1 000 tph ! Furthermore, if one assumes that this conveyor would be fed by a conveyor and that it would in turn discharge onto a receiving belt, the quantity of spillage to be picked up and removed escalates to enormous proportions.

The cost of the wasted product, of damage to components and the costs associated with handling this spillage can be astronomical, not to mention the environmental impact.

It is for these reasons that the integrity and effectiveness of belt cleaning equipment has come under the spotlight over the last decade.

This section aims to provide the learner with an understanding of why belt cleaning is important as well as a grasp of the different issues to be considered when selecting and positioning belt cleaning equipment onto a conveyor.

Having covered the fundamental considerations of belt cleaning, detailed information regarding the different cleaning devices and their specific features is provided in this section of the Ckit Handbook.
