Fabric Belt Splicing
Mark belt ends as shown in the cutting sketch on page 7, and adjust step length in accordance with table for RO-PLY type. Cut belt ends diagonally.
Cut through the cover according to the marking and pull off the cover at the innermost step.
Cut through the top fabric ply and STIFLEX down to the bottom fabric ply. Be careful not to damage the bottom fabric ply.
By bending the belt you can check the cutting depth and thus better avoid damaging the bottom fabric ply.
Open the belt carefully by means of the ply-lifter ensuring that the STIFLEX is loosened effectively from the bottom fabric ply.
Pull off cover, fabric ply and STIFLEX. The easiest way to do this by hand is to cut up the belt in narrow strips and pull off each strip separately.
By means of a winch all plies may be pul- led off at once. Stepping of the other belt end is done in the same way.
PREPARATION FOR VULCANIZINGWhen both belt ends have been stepped, check carefu1ly that they fit each other. Spread cement on all fabric surfaces. When completely dry (the cement must not feel tacky when touched by a finger), spread on another layer of cement.
Prepare a piece of sheet while waiting for the cement to dry. Clean the uncovered side with Ethylacetate and spread on a thin layer of cement. After drying of second layer, place the sheet on one belt end and press well.
Trim the sheet along the belt end. Remove the foil carefully, and spread a thin layer of cement on the sheet.
After drying - the surfaces should be slightly tacky - join belt ends very carefully.
Mark up two strips, approx. 25 mm wide, one on either side of the cover joint on both top and bottom side. Cut through the cover and pull off strips.
Raise rubber edges carefully in order to create a rough surface. Avoid grinding the carcass.
Remove dust carefully.
Make a strip of cover sheet according to the recess in the cover.
Trim the cover strip along the marking.
Spread cement on the recess and, when complete dry, spread with cement once more. After drying, put in the cover sheet and press well.
Cut off cover strips parallel to the belt edges.
