Bevel Gears

Bevel gears have teeth shaped generally like ordinary spur gears, except that the tooth surfaces are made up of conical elements. The teeth may be straight or spiral (Figure 13). Spiral teeth engage gradually (starting at one side, as with helical gears), a feature enabling them to operate more smoothly and quietly.

Except for hypoid gears (Figure 14) bevel gears are mounted on shafts having intersecting axes. The shaft axes are usually, but not necessarily, perpendicular. The nonintersecting shaft feature of hypoid gears are sometimes desirable for shafts to be lowered under the center line of the ring-gear. These are present in few systems these days, and are mentioned for interest sake only, since they are not used by Hansen Transmissions.
